Co-op gift for state-of-the-art stretcher

A DONATION of £1,070 from The Co-operative Group's Community Fund has helped Calder Valley Search and Rescue team acquire a state-of-the-art stretcher.

Based in Mytholmroyd, the team was founded by volunteers in 1965 to search for and rescue lost and injured people within West Yorkshire.

The team, which has 47 volunteers with many from the upper valley areas, is using the 1,070 to replace a 20-year-old stretcher with a modern lightweight MacInnes supalite stretcher, which has a wheel fitted making it easier for the team members to manoeuvre and more comfortable for the casualties.

Al Day, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team Leader, said: "This grant from The Co-operative will make a big difference to the search and rescue team and also the casualties.

"As a registered charity we rely on fundraising and donations to meet our annual 16,000 running costs so this Community Fund grant will help us meet major expenses and replace an old stretcher with more modern and user-friendly equipment and help us maintain our vital round-the-clock service."

The Community Fund offers grants of between 100 and 2,000, with local Co-operative members' committees allocating awards based on a set of values and principles such as social responsibility and caring for others.

About 200,000 is available annually to support charities and community groups in the region. Application forms are available online at www.co-operative.coop/membership/Community-Fund or by telephoning 0161 827 5879.

"The Community Fund can make a real and lasting contribution to local communities and the Calder Valley Search and Rescue team is certainly a deserving cause," said The Co-operative's regional secretary, Suzanne Heron.

"Many community groups share our co-operative values and could benefit from an award and we would certainly welcome their applications."
