Council redundancy policy under the microscope

Calderdale Councillors are to discuss revision of the council's redundancy policy.

Meeting last Thursday, mmembers of the council's use of resources scrutiny panel will consider a report. It will set out the need for Cabinet to decide if they wish to enter into consultation with staff to amend the current redundancy policy.

The report says that due to future budget restraints it is important that financial cuts are made. These may result in changes to employment policies.

Changing the policy would result in a reduction in the cost of redundancy payments to the council.

Calderdale Council's Cabinet member, performance and resources, Coun Peter Wardhaugh, says before any proposals are put before trades unions, members of scrutiny panel should have the opportunity to comment.

"There will be a full consultation of staff on any proposed changes to the redundancy policy."

Scrutiny panel chairman, Coun Bryan Smith, said: "Scrutiny panel will give the report careful consideration before passing its views to Cabinet."
