Does anyone know my grandfather's friends?
READER Georgina Fletcher-Cooke, who lives in London, has found two intriguing photographs among her grandmother's effects.
One shows her grandfather with two friends, all in uniform.
“I think it may have been taken in 1915 by E Clapham, Ferney Lee Day and Electric Studio, Todmorden.
“My grandparents (Walter and Esther Southwell) came from Todmorden, and were married in 1916,” she writes.
Her grandfather has written on the back of the photo, in pencil, probably from the Front, on November 8, 1917: “My dear wife, Just a line hoping this finds you and my little boy quite well. I expected a letter from you this morning. Hope I shall have one in the morning.
“Give my best love to all at home. With fondest love from your husband.”
Mrs Fletcher-Cooke adds that there is no indication of who the other two soldiers are but it seems that her grandmother must have known them.
“I hope that your readers may know who the other two young men were. My grandfather would have been 26 in 1915.”
