Drop drink drivers in it
POLICE are urging residents to make the Upper Calder Valley a drink drive free zone.
People who spot someone drinking and driving are being asked to take a zero tolerance approach and tell officers immediately.
Police believe this will help to take potential killers off the roads.
Inspector Allan Raw, of the Upper Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Every driver knows the law on drinking and driving, so there is no excuse for it.
"Even one alcoholic drink impairs your ability to drive, and the consequences can be devastating not just for you the driver but other motorists and pedestrians. Yet people still do it, despite the obvious dangers.
"I am calling on people living in the Upper Valley area to send a clear message to anyone considering getting behind the wheel after drinking - don't do it.
"If you know that after a few drinks you would consider getting behind the wheel then I want you to consider the consequences.
"What will the effects be on you and others if you cause an accident and somebody is killed or seriously injured?
"What will the effects be on you and your family if you are arrested for drink driving and lose your driving licence or worse?"
Insp Raw is calling on residents to give police a call if they spot someone drinking and driving or about to do so.
He said: "Please give us a call directly on 0845 6060606 or 01422 337236. We have traffic officers who will deal with the problem.
"Drink driving ruins lives. Let's put a stop to it."
David Short, Calderdale Council's road safety projects manager and chair of the safer roads partnership, said: "Drinking and driving is one of the three top causes of death on the roads, the other two being speeding and not wearing seat belts.
"The safer roads partnership fully supports the police and urges members of the public to report those they know who drink and drive.
"You just might save a life."
