'Fence it in' solution to chemical site

COUNCILLORS have decided to take action in response to concerns about a potentially hazardous site in Todmorden.

Caldervale Mill, a former textile mill on Pudsey Road which was used as a dye works, has fallen into disrepair after going into administration. Part of the open site had been used to store chemicals.

On Monday, Calderdale Council's Cabinet agreed to provide a two metre high fence around the site to improve security and also ensure there is continued monitoring of the site for significant changes.

Coun Amanda Byrne, Calderdale Council's portfolio holder for economy and the environment, said: "We are responding to the concerns of local people.

"In this particular case there is no landowner who we can approach to do the work that is required on this site. It falls upon the council to bear the cost of making this site safe.

"The safety of the public and preserving the local environment are key priorities in this case."
