Fun despite problems at Lions' fun day

DESPITE heavy rain and the non-appearance of some entertainers, a good time was had by people of all ages at Todmorden Lions' family fun day.

The annual event held at Todmorden High School attracted fewer people than usual but those who braved the elements enjoyed a range of entertainment including magic displays, dog agility shows and demonstrations by a circus performer.

Lion Rod Wainwright said: "It was, unfortunately, a very poor morning with heavy rain showers. This obviously influenced many people to stay at home."

The rain stopped just in time for the day's entertainment to begin later in the morning.

Rod said the arrival of magician Peter Roberts coincided with the weather brightening up.

"We don't know if he said 'Hey presto' or 'Abracadabra' or whether it was an amazing coincidence but it stopped raining and the sun came out," he said.

"Unfortunately the damage had been done and we had fewer car boots and visitors than usual."

It remained fine and sunny for the rest of the day, despite a breeze which blew down several gazebos.

Those who did attend the fun day were entertained by Peter Roberts' magic displays and the ever popular Pendle Dog Agility Club.

High Jinx, a circus performer, demonstrated escaping from a straight jacket in under 90 seconds and juggling flaming fire sticks while riding a triple decker unicycle.

The Lions club apologised for the absence of the advertised circus at the fun day as arrangements fell through at short notice.

Rod said: "We spent an enormous amount of time and effort seeking a replacement circus.

"However due to the fact that our event was on the Bank Holiday weekend and only one week away, this proved very difficult.

"We are very grateful therefore for High Jinx agreeing to appear at such short notice."

The club also apologised for the non-appearance of the children's fun fair.

Several charity stalls raised nearly 1,000 between them on the day. "Unfortunately, apart from the Leos, no Todmorden-based charities took advantage of the offer of a free stall to make money for themselves," Rod said. He said it was too early to give an estimate of the total proceeds raised at the fun day.
