Gas company grants £5,000 cash

A GRANT of £5,000 has been awarded to Incredible Edible Todmorden to help with the planting of fruit and vegetables in the grounds of Todmorden Health Centre.

IET was one of 23 projects from across the North of England to win support from Northern Green Networks, a scheme run by the region's gas pipeline company to support grass roots environmental projects.

Nick Green, one of the founding members of IET, explained: "During the last couple of years we have got loads of people involved in growing local food for local people. We take even the smallest pieces of land and use them to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs.

"This grant is a big boost for us as it enables us to adopt the land in the health centre.

"We have already planted fruit trees, built herb and apothecary gardens and purchased a range of fruit and vegetable plants."

Presenting the award from Northern Gas Networks, Dave Hutchison said: "Using communal land to grow food is such a simple idea and to see it take off as it has in Todmorden is really inspiring."
