Get-together for doctor who’s making switch

A doctor who is switching medical practices is invited patients and friends to join him at a party to mark the move.

Dr Michael Ross is leaving Todmorden Group Practice after eight years but is only stepping upstairs, to work for the Calder Group Practice which is also based at Todmorden Health Centre, Lower George Street, Todmorden.

Dr Ross, who is 61, said he would not give a comment on the reasons for his move but wanted to invite patients to the social event as he had loved meeting Todmorden people.

He began working in Todmorden in 2005, moving from an inner city practice at Bradford, and lives at Oxenhope.

“I was really interested in the Todmorden community, which is really very special indeed.

“They are a proper community and support each other, and it is one which has lots of abilities and talents.

“It’s a hard working place and relates very well to its physical environment,” he said.

“I’ve genuinely found it a privilege to find out other people’s stories and been able to help them.”

There were many unsung heroes he had come across, said Dr Ross, from a Lancaster Bomber crew member who had flown a mission over Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest to someone who successfully protected a Jewish citizen in Poland helping keep them safe to the end of the second world war.

There were less dramatic but no less interesting stories and a lot of successful people in Todmorden.

“What’s special about the people here is that they have their own strong opinions,” he said.

“For that reason I didn’t want to leave all these people, which is why I have arranged the party at the Hippdrome Theatre for all patients and friends to come along.”

It will be held at the theatre, at Halifax Road across from the health centre, on Friday, February 1, from 7pm.

Dr Ross asked that anyone coming bring some food along for a Jacob’s join meal.

Some patients would be putting on some entertainment, he said.

“The Hippodrome is very close to the practice and an important facility for the town.

“It’s a sort of celebration of Todmorden people and Todmorden life,” he said.

Dr Ross and his wife, Jill, have four children, Benjamin, Rebecca, Sarah and Toby.
