Get knitting some miniature winter masterpieces!

LITTLE juice bottles are getting cold this time of year and need the warmth of a woolly hat so Todmorden's knitters are called to take up the challenge to create miniature masterpieces again to raise money for charity.

And this year innocent drinks, the company that organises the 'big knit' to raise money for Age Concern, is also on the look-out for three national 'knitters of the year', who can be nominated by their local branch of Age Concern for their contribution.

Age Concern Todmorden will be taking part in the big knit again this year to raise funds.

Last year volunteers knitted over 4,500 little bobble hats, which are designed to sit on the tops of innocent fruit smoothie bottles to be sold in Sainsbury's in November. For every behatted bottle sold Sainsbury's and innocent give 50p to Age Concern and last year over 200,000 was raised nationally.

"We raised over 2,000 last year but we are hoping to beat that this time," said chairwoman of Age Concern Todmorden, Dorothy Jordan.

"We are asking Todmorden's creative knitters to support us again so we can continue to provide all the services we do.

"This year innocent have decided not to provide bobbles for the little hats as the money can be put to better use by Age Concern. So this year knitters are asked to create their own bobbles, or fancy trim."

Knitting patterns, which help knitters ensure the hats are the correct size for the bottles, can be picked up from the Age Concern office on Burnley Road.

And anyone not wanting to knit but with spare double knitting yarn can support the cause by donating their yarn.

Keen knitters have already started creating the little hats, which are miniature works of art, but there's still time for willing volunteers to take up the challenge. The deadline for all hats to be handed in is Friday, October 10.
