AN upper Calder Valley golf club is aiming to break with tradition and open its doors up to the general public.

Bosses at Todmorden Golf Club have appointed Dean and Lisa Marriott as the new club stewards and are looking to organise events that will attract non-members.

Club secretary Dave Setterfield said: “We are delighted to have Dean and Lisa on board and we are hoping they can help us attract more people from Todmorden.

“Historically the club has not been open to the public, but we are trying to change that.

“We are hoping to get more weddings, birthday parties, business functions and funerals.

“It is an old traditional club with great views and in the summer we’re hoping to have barbecues and hog roasts. We have also got facilities for a marquee on the car park.”

The club, at Rive Rocks, Cross Stone, Todmorden, will host music tribute nights throughout the year and offer special menus for Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ Day and Easter.

Dean, who used to work at Sherwood Forest Golf Club, said: “We are not looking to make too may changes in terms of the menu. We’ll just do that when the members get sick of it.

“It is a members’ club, but there is very reasonable social membership which gives customers discounts on food and drinks.”

On the golf side, the club is also looking to open its doors to more people.

Dave said: “We welcome visitors and visiting parties and we are going to have some open days

“Mark McEvoy, who is a PGA professional, is available to do beginners and elite coaching and offer advice. He is also a rules official with the PGA Tour, so he can give advice on that as well.”
