Graham all set for mountain a month

HE’S jumped out of a plane, endured a 50 mile non-stop walk and completed a survival event.

Now Hucknall’s answer to Superman is about to embark on a challenge to end all challenges.

Graham Dearden of The Drift, is aiming to climb a mountain a month starting this weekend with the smallest peak before culminating in climbing the highest peak in the world -Mount Everest.

And not only that he will be dressed in pink and raising money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

“I have done a number of things over the years to raise money for various charities but this is the ultimate challenge for me,” explained Graham who is married and has two grown-up children.

“I love walking and climbing as a hobby but I hit 50 two years ago which seems to have been a turning point. Now I seem to be challenging myself more as a way to stop myself getting older and fighting back the years.”

Graham’s mountain challenge will start off steady with Mam Tor in the Peak District which reaches 1,765ft before ascending Kinder Scout at 2,087ft in March.

In April Graham will tackle Whernside at 2,415ft before taking on Scafell Pike in May. Summer will see him scale Snowdon in Wales in June at 3,560ft whilst Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis in Scotland, will be the July target.

Coniston Old Man will be climbed twice before culminating in the monster mountain of Everest when Graham will attempt to reach base camp in September with a friend.

Motivation for the challenge is to raise cash for the breast cancer charity in memory of Graham’s friend and colleague, Becky Prokopiuk, who lost her battle with the disease, aged just 32.

“I’m very self-motivated but knowing that whatever passing pain I might experience along the way, it is nothing compared to the pain a family experience of losing a loved one.”
