Grant aims to help jobhunters find work

Calder Valley people are to be helped to get a better foothold on the jobs ladder thanks to a grant from the Skills Funding Agency.
Wadsworth Community Association has taken another step forward in its plan to revive the community centre and help local people by winning a £9,500 bid from the agency to run two courses.
The Community Grants funding, which is administered by Your Consortium in Goole, offers money via the European Social Fund to small community organisations to help unemployed people or those working for eight hours or less a week to build confidence, plan their futures, write a good CV, practise interview skills and gain useful qualifications.
The first Skills2Work Course starts on Thursday, January 31 and runs from 10am to 1pm at the Community Centre in Old Town. It will run every Thursday for eight weeks.
People who sign up for the course can get financial help with bus fares, child care and even new clothes for interviews. Two of the eight weeks will be spent working on money matters, budgeting and benefits.
Learners will be encouraged to attend a short Health and Safety at Work course and get a Food Hygiene qualification.
Everyone will have one-to-one help to work out what they need to do to get into work or further learning. People who feel ready will also be supported to do 10 hours’ work experience with a local employer.
Employability tutor Ibrar Hussain said: “These courses can be really helpful for people who have struggled to get a job because of a disability or because they have been knocked back too often and given up hope of ever working again. We will also look at how to set up your own business so there should be something for everyone.” The Government launched a new scheme in November 2012 called Universal Job Match. This scheme makes it mandatory for people on employment benefits to have an up-to-date CV which will go on a national website so that employers can look for suitable applicants for their vacancies. “Anyone without a CV may have their benefits stopped so this course is a great place to think about the future,” Ibrar said.
