Hallroyd set to re-open as upgrade finishes

DRIVERS have seen their journey times return to normal after gas repair work which had caused major traffic congestion was finally completed.

Engineers had been conducting repairs to leaks on a gas main on Burnley Road, opposite Todmorden bus station, for several weeks.

Tempororary traffic lights were in operation, creating lengthy tailbacks through Todmorden town centre and increasing journey times.

Northern Gas Networks has confirmed that the work is now complete and the traffic lights were removed over the weekend.

Gwen Evans, spokesperson for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to thank people for their patience and understanding while engineers from United Utilities carried out this essential repair work on behalf of Northern Gas Networks.”

Although they welcomed the completion of the repair work on Burnley Road, drivers are still facing disruption in another part of town.

Hallroyd Road remains closed while a gas upgrade scheme is carried out in the area but it is scheduled to re-open next week.

Ms Evans said: “Engineers from United Utilities and Enterprise are carrying out planned work to improve the gas mains in the Hallroyd Road area on behalf of Northern Gas Networks.

“The work is part of a 78,000 project to replace 565m of ageing metal gas main with modern plastic pipe which is safer and more reliable.

“The good news is that this upgrade scheme will safeguard the area’s gas supply for decades to come. Work is due for completion during the week commencing February 15.

“In order to carry out this work safely it was necessary to put a road closure in place on the narrow section of Hallroyd from the rail bridge to the junction with Stansfield Hall Road. The closure will remain in place until February 10.

“A two-way diversion route is in operation via Stansfield Hall Road, Victoria Road, Halifax Road and the unaffected section of Hallroyd Road.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience but the work is essential to the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to the area.”
