Home’s standard of care criticised

The standard of care at a Todmorden residential home has been criticised by the industry watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has taken enforcement action against Millreed Lodge, Walsden, for failing to protect the safety and welfare of residents.

The warning to Millreed Lodge came after an unannounced inspection in September found staff had failed to report allegations of abuse and other incidents to the CQC, as required.

Inspectors also said action was needed to improve care after findings including one patient who had developed a pressure sore had no wound care plan in place.

The home’s records stated a referral was needed for a specialist nurse - but the referral was not made until several days later and the specialist nurse found the pressure ulcer was graded “very severe”.

Inspectors also witnessed no mid-morning drinks served and one person asking repeatedly for a drink.

Liz Shufflebottom, manager of Millreed Lodge, said all areas of concern were acted on immediately after the October report.

She said: “The CQC revisited in January 2013, acknowledged the improvements made and did not highlight any further concerns. We are awaiting a formal response from them.”

Millreed Lodge was one of four Calderdale residential homes criticised by the CQC.

Inspectors ruled action was needed at Clover House, Savile Road, Halifax, after a series of grim findings.

Action was needed at Lee Mount Residential Home in Halifax after concerns including lack of food.

Residents at St Winifred’s Nursing Home in Rastrick were deemed at risk from inaccurate medical and care records.
