It's back by demand - free half-term arts packages for children in Todmorden and Hebden Bridge

ARTS and theatre groups will be linking up with the council to lay on free Easter holiday activities for young people in Todmorden and Hebden Bridge.

During the February half-term holiday 150 places on a similar scheme were offered to children aged between seven and 17 at the Hippodrome Theatre, Halifax Road, Todmorden, by the Todmorden Arts for Today (TodAY) project in conjunction with Calderdale schools extended services.

Open to young people living in the OL14 and HX7 postcode (Todmorden and Hebden Royd) areas, it proved so successful that Hebden Bridge Little Theatre, Holme Street, Hebden Bridge, will join the Hippodrome as the venue for some activities during the Easter break.

Project co-ordinator James Claxton said that two three-day activity schemes, one at each venue, had been put together.

"The demand for the half-term scheme and the feedback received from both parents and children indicates there is a strong interest in these types of activity during the holidays.

"They are designed to be fun and challenging sessions allowing the children to play and develop different artistic skills while encouraging teamwork and confidence building.

"We hope to double our reach this time, and provide activities for up to 300 young people," he said.

Mr Claxton said places would be allocated on a first come, first served basis and priority would be given to those who have not yet been offered a free place by the TodAY project.

Information on the schemes has been sent out to local schools this week and every child should receive a leaflet with the timetable of activities offered through extended services.

The Hippodrome package, running on March 30, 31, and April 1, which on different days includes puppet-making, mask-making, Be A Popstar sessions and hip hop and breakdance sessions.

A similar mix is available at the Little Theatre on April 6, 7 and 8.
