Calderdale is ranked second in West Yorkshire in terms of performance by students in GCSE and A-level exams, according to the latest school league tables.

The number of pupils achieving five A* to C grades including English and maths has risen from 59.4 per cent in 2011 to 61.1 per cent in 2012. The national average is 58.8 per cent.

At A-level, Calderdale is ranked second again in West Yorkshire with an average points score per pupil of 728.5. The national average is 754.4.

There were strong performances from Todmorden High School at both GCSE and A-level.

The school recorded its best ever set of A-level results and also saw the number of GCSE students achieving five A* to C grades including English and maths increase by five per cent on the previous year to 50 per cent.

Mike Kershaw, head of sixth form, said: “I have been delighted with the progress that our sixth form students have been making in recent years.

“Our numbers have been steadily increasing and the results achieved by our students have been improving.

“We have had a record number of students applying to university this year and so far they have been very successful in receiving offers.”

It was a disappointing year for Calder High School, Mytholmroyd, which saw a 13 per cent decrease in the number of students achieving five A* to C grades including English and maths to 48 per cent. The school’s average points score per student at A-level was 576.1.

But Giles Stephenson, director of post-16 learning, said there were some great individual performances and many students exceeded their targets. “We know how lucky we are to work with such fantastic students,” he said.

“Judging by the efforts of both staff and students we can expect that 2013 will bring even greater success to all of students at Calder VI. But one thing is for sure - it will not be for a lack of trying.”
