Long lost festive music will get first UK airing this Saturday

SINGERS young and old are combining with orchestra players again this year to present a stunning Christmas hamper of fine music guaranteed to put you in festive mood.

The Christmas concert in Todmorden Town Hall on Saturday December 19, always a popular seasonal event, promises to be bigger and better than ever this year.

Listed among the goodies from the festive hamper is a delightful world first rediscovered by Lawrence Killian who will conduct Todmorden Orchestra.

The piece emerged during a recent search through American hand-written music archives. It was written in 1887 by Carl Ludwig and is as bright, fresh and exciting today as the sight of new-fallen snow on Christmas morning.

Back in 1887 the sleigh ride music was hand-written by the composer for his local town band in Cleveland, Ohio, and given the title of Fatinitza Galop.

As the 19th century audience went along to enjoy the one and only performance, it snowed in the town, an event almost unheard of in that part of the States. Could history be repeated this year in Todmorden?

Lawrence was given permission to transcribe and perform the music which will be heard for the first time outside Cleveland in Todmorden Town Hall.

Performers at the Christmas Concert are members of the Choral Society, conducted by Daniel Bath, Todmorden Orchestra, and the Calderdale Youth Choir under the baton of Richard Pomfret.

Members of the audience who heard the young singers at a July concert in the Central Methodist Church described their performance then as stunning.

It will be again, with a programme that includes In Dolce Jubilo, accompanied by two violins and a cello.

The family event will take in a medley of seasonal offerings from the choral society and the orchestra including invitations to sing along with Christmas carols.

The programme of seasonal entertainment will be drawn together with the welcome return of compere Glen Cannon, master of anecdotal commentary who is sure to enhance the mood of the night.

It's an evening to enjoy and be merry.

Tickets for the concert are available at the Tourist Information Centre in Todmorden and at the hall door, adults 8, concessions 6 and accompanied children 1.
