A FILM producer has spoken of her pride at seeing her work screened at the Paralympic Games opening ceremony.

Lou Birks, of Ferney Lee Road, Todmorden, was in the Olympic Stadium and saw her film on the big screen, watched by the Queen, 80,000 spectators and millions of viewers on TV as the Paralympic flag was raised.

“It was very, very exciting,” she said. “I think the performers and the show were amazing.

“I’m just very proud that I could be part of that amazing show.

“I partied with the performers afterwards. That was nice.”

Lou had the idea to re-make the film “Olympia”, which was produced for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, but this time using paralympic athletes and re-naming it “Paralympia”.

“The film is really quite controversial,” she said.

“Olympia is all about perfect bodies and physical appearances.

“I wanted to make that film but with paralympic athletes, people who many would not believe to be perfect.

“I thought the artistic director of the festival was very brave to commission it because it could have offended many people.”

She said she has received good feedback from people who watched it and is considering a private screening in Todmorden for those who did not see it.

Lou has celebrated further success recently as another of her films, “Stubborn and Spite”, about two disabled drivers, has won the MiShorts silver medal.

“I’m really pleased with that,” she said.

“It’s nice to be having a little bit of success at the moment.”
