Lucky escape for shoppers as car crashes into market

Shoppers had a lucky escape when a car crashed into Todmorden Market during a busy market day.

A Toyota Avensis was travelling along Burnley Road on Friday afternoon at 2.20pm when the driver lost control.

The car crashed through a bollard, mounted the pavement and hit an eight-year-old boy who was looking around the market with his family.

He suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

He did not require hospital treatment.

The driver of the car was unhurt.

PCSO Elayne Wright, from the Upper Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "I was just round the corner when I heard the scream and came round to see what had happened.

"The driver has lost control after what we believe could have been a tyre blowout.

"The car came off the road, mounted the pavement and hit a little lad who was with his mum and brothers and sisters.

"I think the bollard took the most of the impact.

"The car kept going and just clipped the lad's legs.

"He was treated at the scene."
