Man held after gun cops swoop on home
Police seal off the house in the armed operation
ARMED officers surrounded a home in Todmorden for over two and a half hours on Tuesday.
Around 20 officers attended the address in the rural Wickenberry area of Meadow Bottom, where a 26-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm.
Officers executed a search warrant at the address under the Firearms Act and seized three air weapons.
An eyewitness said: “I’d just got back into the house at 10am when a neighbour stopped me and told me that there were armed police officers surrounding a house in Wickenberry.
“I went up there about 11am and saw a lot of officers armed with rifles.
“I said that I knew the man and if there was a siege I could help and talk him down.”
He said the reason it took the police so long to enter the property was because they struggled to get past the property owner’s dog.
Police eventually entered the building around 12.15pm where a spokesperson said a 26-year-old man was arrested.
They said the man, who was taken into custody, was later released without charge.
Detective Chief Inspector Terry Long, of Calderdale Police, said: “This was a planned operation involving firearms officers and members of the local neighbourhood policing team.
“A man was arrested as a result of information received.
“We respond to all information received by the local community and we treat matters of this nature very seriously.
“Local neighbourhood policing team officers have been out in the area to reassure residents and to encourage them to pass on any information they have either to police on 101 or, anonymously, via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
A passer-by added: “When I came past at 12pm there were three police cars parked near the property, but apart from that I didn’t see anything.”
