Michael Portillo calls in for taste of tod
TELEVISION crews descended on Todmorden again to discuss food with local producers and sellers.
Michael Portillo met Pam Warhurst and Mary Clear, of Incredible Edible Todmorden, when he came to the town to film a section for his documentary about the transportation of food on the railways, which will be aired next year.
"Despite the horrible weather he seemed to enjoy his visit to Todmorden," said Pam.
"Although his programme is about the railways he came here to make the link between the railways and how they were used to transport food up and down the country.
"He was impressed with the vegetable patch in the station car park and the herbs and we took him to talk to traders in Todmorden market."
Jean Hartley, of Hartley's Crumbly Cheese Stall in Todmorden Market, said he had been very interested in all the local produce and the blackboards used by traders to inform shoppers of their local produce.
"He tried some of the Lancashire crumbly cheese, which is sourced within thirty miles of here. All the camera crew tried it and liked it too but no-one could try Todmorden's own East Lee soft cheese as we'd sold out! They'd missed it," said Jean.
"This is good for Todmorden as it puts the town on the map and anything that puts the market on the map is also good because we need the support of the local people to keep the market going."
A visit to Lynne Midwinter's home to see how Todmorden residents are growing their own vegetables and keeping chickens followed the market tour.
"He came to see our free range chickens in the garden," said Lynne. "And we all went on an egg hunt as my hens don't lay their eggs in convenient places.
"He seemed a really nice person and very interested in what we were doing. I think he's a foodie. It would be great if we could just let people know how easy it is grow your own vegetables and keep a few chickens in your garden."
