More than three inches of rain could fall in 24 hours

The Met Office is forecasting that up to 100mm (over three inches) of rain could fall over parts of the north of England, the Midlands and north and east Wales during the next 24 hours.

Warnings are likely to be issued for river and surface water flooding. Residents in Yorkshire and the north east are being urged to prepare for possible flooding by checking the weather forecasts, signing up for flood warnings and staying out of flood water.

Commuters across the country have already experienced disruption this morning on roads and rail lines affected by flooding, and further impacts could be seen this evening.

The Environment Agency has mobilised teams across the country to check on flood defences, clear any river blockages and closely monitor river levels. Yorkshire Water says it is also working hard to make sure sewers are free from blockages.

In addition to surface water flooding, it is likely that a significant number of river flood alerts (meaning that flooding is possible) and warnings (meaning that flooding is expected) will be issued over the coming days. Those in areas at risk should check the Environment Agency website for the latest information: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood and sign up for free flood warnings on the Environment Agency’s website or by calling the Environment Agency Flood Line on 0845 988 1188.
