Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham was the guest speaker at a Calder Valley Labour group fundraiser and voiced his support for two local campaigns.
Speaking at the event in Hebden Bridge, the MP backed the bid to keep the Todmorden walk-in centre open and also said he was against Calder High School becoming an academy.
“I don’t like academies,” he said.
“I just believe, with every bone in my body, in comprehensive education and everything that means.
“I think what Michael Gove is doing is elitist and it’s setting one school against another.
“The party is more pro academy than me.
“Oh, and keep Todmorden walk-in centre open.”
The fundraiser, which was organised by Luddenden Foot ward councillor Simon Young, was attended by local councillors, members of the public and West Yorkshre Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson.
Coun Young said: “It was fantastic to see local Labour Party members there along with members of the public. I was particularly heartened to see Andy back our campaign to save our local walk-in centre.”
Calder ward councillor Nader Fekri said: “As a former comprehensive pupil, it was good that Andy Burnham was singing the praises of Calder High.”
Todmorden ward councillor Steve Sweeney said: “Andy opened the walk-in centre and he was quite concerned about the future of it as, at the moment, it is quite uncertain.”
