Music, song, celebration! £1 million restoration of historic church completed

CELEBRATIONS for a restored historic church were enjoyed by the people of Todmorden and from further afield.

The Mayor of Calderdale and the Mayor of Todmorden joined the congregation gathered in Todmorden Unitarian Church last Saturday, September 6, to celebrate the 1 million restoration of the interior and exterior of the building and grounds and the addition of a well-integrated kitchen and toilet facilities and a modern heating system, which will allow the committee to plan a programme of events from a monthly get-together to concerts and community events.

Lord Shutt, trustee of the Historic Chapels Trust, welcomed the guests and explained the work of the trust, with special reference to Todmorden, and the historic and architectural importance of the unitarian church.

Dr Jennifer Freeman, director of the trust, described the programme of repairs that have been carried out between 1993 and 2008 and Pam Warhurst as chairwoman of the Todmorden Local Management Committee, outlined the potential for local use.

Christine Potter, of the committee, said: "The Todmorden Orchestra chose, very appropriately, to play the Water Music, by Handel. Later Todmorden Choral Society sang pieces by Bruckner, Palestrina and Mozart, demonstrating that the acoustics of the building are excellent for instrumental music and choral works.

"Lord Shutt led the vote of thanks for all who had been involved in the impressive 1 million restoration, including the very many fine craftsmen needed to bring it back to life. The church is one of only a few churches reopened in recent times.

"When all the bouquets and thanks had been presented the visitors appreciatively tucked into a substantial afternoon tea, which had been provided by the committee, and many stayed late."
