Ofsted praises 'friendly and caring' school

SHADE School has a harmonious environment and is well placed to continue its journey of success, according to inspectors.

In the school's latest Ofsted report, inspectors praised the atmosphere in the school and the curriculum which provides well organised opportunities for learning and experiences that contribute to pupils' well-being and development.

Lead inspector Melvyn Hemmings said: "The school is a friendly and caring place in which to learn.

"Pupils behave well and are keen to learn, which contributes well to the progress they make. Pupils tackle their activities enthusiastically, showing much interest and enjoyment in their work.

"They are attentive, eager to contribute to group and class discussions and appreciative of the views and ideas of others."

Mr Hemmings said pupils enjoy taking on responsibilities, such as working with town planners to design the community playground, and carry them out diligently.

By the time pupils leave the school at the end of Year six, they attain above average standards in English, maths and science.

Mr Hemmings said: "Teachers have good subject knowledge that enables them to explain ideas clearly and confidently.

"Good planning ensures that groups of different abilities are given work that challenges them effectively.

"The headteacher's focused leadership is building effectively upon the school's success over previous years.

"It provides clear educational direction and a challenging shared vision for the improvement of the school."

Headteacher Jan Dawson said: "We are really pleased that they found Shade School to be a friendly, caring place in which our children learn.

"Visitors regularly comment on the harmonious atmosphere at the school."

She said the broad curriculum prepares the children well for secondary school and sets them on the way to achieving their potential.

A previous inspection asked the school to provide an outdoor play area.

This led to the opening of the new sky platform last year.

"The addition of the sky platform has contributed towards the development of our children as individual learners," she said.

"The outdoor area provides a stimulating learning environment."
