Parishioners look to help many people with Lent project

Parishioners have chosen an online charity to support as its Lent project and hope to help make a big difference to many people.

Over the next few weeks, St Mary’s Church in Todmorden will be supporting Acts 435, a charity which connects people in need with those who want to make a difference.

The charity gives instant feedback on how donations are used. Donors receive personalised thank you messages from those they help.

Between now and Easter Sunday, the St Mary’s community will be looking at ways to promote giving to those in need, as well as supporting those in their own community who can benefit from an Acts 435 grant.

Rev Canon Owen Page, vicar at St Mary’s, said: “Lent is a wonderful opportunity to pause and focus together on a project that is making a practical, real difference in the lives of individuals and families.

“We hope that Acts 435 will make a big difference for many people.

“Little by little, we can all make the world a better place.”

Acts 435 is an online giving charity based on Acts chapter four verses 32-35 in the Bible - a passage about people living in a community and those who have resources helping those without.

The religious period of Lent begins each year on Ash Wednesday and leads up to Easter Sunday.

It traditionally lasts for 40 days, representing the time Jesus spent fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry.

It is a time when people commit to giving up luxury items, such as chocolate and alcohol, as a form of penitance to prepare themselves for the celebrations at Easter.
