Picture House bid needs Friends

FILM fans interested in protecting the long-term future of the upper Calder Valley’s most historic cinema are being asked to step forward.

Hebden Royd Town Council is looking to take over the running of the Picture House on New Road from Calderdale Council and is inviting residents to join the Friends Of The Picture House (FOPH) group when it is re-launches later this year.

Picture House Committee Chairman Coun Susan Press said: “The town council is committed to involving as many people in the community as we can to help us ensure the Picture House continues to thrive and become even more successful.”

If the bid is successful, the cinema will be run by a Picture House Consortium, which will be made up of six members of the Picture House Committee, the Mayor of Hebden Royd, a representative from the rural parishes, one specialist adviser, and there will be two seats available for either a member of the FOTPH or a member of a users group. However, only elected representatives of the town council will be able to vote.

The town council must meet Calderdale’s deadline of December 1, 2011, to prove it has the ability to finance its plan, before the leasehold of the historic building is transferred.

An FOPH re-launch meeting is planned for the Autumn and anyone with spare time, skills and the desire to make the cinema better can join by calling 01422 842181 or emailing foph@hebdenroyd.org.uk.
