TWO food pioneers have been invited to the annual Women of the Year lunch to celebrate their contribution to the local community.

Pam Warhurst and Mary Clear, of Incredible Edible Todmorden, will travel down to London for the event later this month after both were named among 400 Women of the Year in recognition of their efforts in founding the sustainable food movement, which has attracted national and global interest.

Pam said: “Incredible Edible is the best thing I’ve ever been involved with.

“It is wonderful to know that we have shown people it is possible to improve their lives in such a simple way, and to be recognised for this makes us both very proud.

“I’m delighted to have been invited to the lunch, and I’m looking forward to hearing all the other women’s inspiring stories.”

Pam and Mary invented Incredible Edible with the simple belief that everybody can do something to help the environment and make a difference to society.

The project has three main aims: to engage local people in growing their own food in public spaces; to share food skills in schools and the community; and to support local farmers and commerce.

Todmorden is fast becoming a sustainable town, with spare land and school playgrounds transformed into vegetable patches which are used and maintained by volunteers from the community.

The town has also seen a 46 per cent increase in local food sales.

Since its birth in Todmorden, Incredible Edible has spread to more than 30 towns across the country.

Pam and Mary are currently discussing the project with two London boroughs.

Mary said: “I’m proud to represent all of the people who have helped Incredible Edible to become such a success – if I had my way, we would all be attending the lunch together.

“Pam and I live such busy lives that the lunch will be a lovely opportunity to reflect on what we have achieved together – and perhaps also to start cooking up our next project.

“Watch this space!”
