Playtime’s over as nursery forced to close
Closing down soon, ABC Nursery, Ferney Lee, Todmorden.
An award-winning nursery will close its doors next month after its search for new premises has proved unsuccessful.
ABC Nursery, which has cared for hundreds of children over the past eight years, was given notice to vacate its current home in the basement at Ferney Lee School, Ferney Lee Road, Todmorden, last year due to the school needing more teaching space.
Despite an extensive hunt for alternative premises, another base has not been found, resulting in the board of trustees announcing that the nursery will close on March 28.
A spokesperson said: “It is with a heavy heart that the board of trustees have had to make the decision to close the doors on one of Todmorden’s much loved children’s facilities, ABC Nursery, marking the end of eight years of hard work and fun times in a happy, stimulating and creative environment.
“There have been hundreds of children through the doors of ABC Nursery, all of whom have received an exceptional standard of childcare and have progressed through to the local schools with a firm foundation of early years learning.
“With its fantastic facilities and excellent staff, ABC Nursery has consistently achieved a good Oftsed rating among numerous other awards.
“We have wholeheartedly searched every inch of Todmorden, and surrounding areas, for an alternative location.
“Despite a great deal of support from the local community, no suitable premises have been found and it is with regret that the nursery will need to close.
“It is such a real shame that this fabulous facility is being forced to close, especially in the current economic climate with jobs being difficult to come by.”
ABC Nursery is a registered charity and not-for-profit social enterprise company set up in 2005 to benefit the local community.
The board of trustees consists of volunteers.
Nursery manager Amanda Wilcock and the trustees have been working closely with the staff to ensure a smooth transition for the children to alternative childcare providers in the local area.
Several staff members have been offered positions elsewhere.
To mark the end of the nursery, a farewell party for all the children and staff who have been associated with it over the years will be held on Saturday, March 16.
The spokesperson said: “The board of trustees would like to take this opportunity to wish all the staff, parents and children from the nursery the very best for the future and to thank them for all their support over the years.”
