Police will keep a base in Selston but is likely to move location

SELSTON Parish Council has moved to reassure residents this week that the police will continue to be based in the village.

It is anticipated that the police contact point will move to a new location and not only remain but it will be enhanced with an additional support supplied by a response vehicle.

Police submitted a planning application for a modular building on Selston Golf Course, which was passed by Ashfield District Council on 8th January.

But this week a police spokesman said that discussions about the move were ongoing. However Coun Gail Turner said it was just a matter of time.

“The parish council has worked hard to keep the police contact point in the village,” said Coun Turner. “It is a priority to keep the police here and the move to the golf club just needs to be rubber-stamped by the Police Commissioner.

“And to receive more resources into the area with the response vehicle is a bonus.”

The predicted move comes after police were forced to cut costs. Trustees of the Tin Hat , where the police are currently based, refused to lower the rent so councillors endeavoured to find a solution.

Coun Turner added: “Myself and Coun Wilson worked hard to find somewhere the police were happy with as the last thing we wanted was to lose them altogether.”

Figures last week revealed all crime in Selston is down 10 per cent year on year with dwelling burglaries 26.7 per cent down.

These positive statistics mean Selston is one of the safest places to live in the
county.

But despite this anti-social behaviour continues to be a problem but one that police and the council are tackling together.

“Anti-social behaviour is the bane of our lives,” said Coun Gail Turner. “I wish parents would look to what their children are doing more and keep kids off the streets.”
