Produce on the menu at food festival launch

THE Todmorden Local Heroes Food Festival got underway last week as more than 20 local businesses displayed their produce at a special food market.

The two-day event, held on Todmorden Market, was the first of three food markets which will take place throughout the summer as part of a packed festival programme.

Lynne Midwinter, one of the festival organisers, said: "I think it was very successful.

"We had a lot of very positive comments about the fabulous produce.

"One of the problems for small producers is they don't have a direct way to market but this gives them a shop window on what they do."

Lynne said that traders on the inside market said their takings were up on a normal Friday and Saturday.

She said: "We want people coming in, using the market and seeing what's there.

"The range of stuff on the market is phenomenal. We need to use it.

"We want everybody to benefit so if we can attract more people into the town on the back of food, they will hopefully buy other things as well.

"If we can make Todmorden busy, everybody benefits."

The festival has been organised by Incredible Edible Todmorden and Todmorden Business Association.

"There are all sorts of things going on," Lynne said.

"We are trying to get people connected with food again."
