Pupils praised for exam achievements

A CALDERDALE Council cabinet member has praised the borough's school pupils after achieving an impressive set of exam results last week.

Coun Olwen Jennings, who is also a ward councillor for Todmorden, said all the signs show that Calderdale pupils have achieved the best ever set of GCSE results.

"It is very pleasing to note that our young people have worked so hard this year and I would like to congratulate all staff and students in Calderdale schools for such positive results," she said.

"Early indications are that results across all schools in Calderdale are significantly improved on last year with more young people than ever before achieving A*-C grades including English and mathematics at GCSE.

"There are some real success stories and this is further evidence of the effort and application demonstrated by our young people.

"Again, congratulations to them all and to their families."

It was a week to remember for schools in the Upper Valley as both Calder High School and Todmorden High School achieved the best set of GCSE results in their history.

Calder High School, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, had a 76 per cent A* to C pass rate. Acting headteacher Chris Sylge said it was "a great set of results ".

GCSE pupils at Todmorden High School smashed all previous records as 72 per cent achieved five A* to C grades.

New headteacher Helen Plaice was thrilled and felt it reflected the commonly held perception that Todmorden High School is "on the up".
