Royalty and sport stars to fill the park for our 2012 carnival

CENTRE Vale Park will be filled with royalty and sport stars for the 2012 Todmorden Carnival on Saturday.

This year’s carnival will have a Diamond Jubilee and Olympics theme in preparation for two of the summer’s big national events.

It gets underway with the parade, setting off from Sanworth Street at 12.30pm and featuring a variety of foot tableaux and fancy dress costumes.

The parade will make its way through the town centre to Centre Vale Park, where Mayor of Todmorden Coun Abid Hussain will officially open the carnival.

Carnival committee chairman Philip Clarke is hoping for good weather so lots of people will attend.

“Up to now it’s given a good forecast,” he said.

“If it’s like it has been this week, it should be a good day. All we can do is pray. I hope people will come down and support the carnival and get involved with it.”

There will be lots of entertainment on the carnival field. Gymnasts and belly dancers will perform in the main arena and there will also be displays by dance teams.

A total of 31 organisations will have stalls at the event and a wide selection of refreshments will be available.

The traditional fun fair is running again this year. It opens on Thursday and will run until Sunday.

Mr Clarke appealed for more entries in the fancy dress and tug of war competitions. There are prizes for the winners of each competition.

The A646 Burnley Road will be closed on Saturday between 12.30pm and 2pm for the parade.
