School sixth form is bucking the trend

Nationally the number of students applying to university is declining, but at Todmorden High School the picture is very different.

Mike Kershaw, sixth form learning leader, said: “Our students are going from strength to strength and we have had the highest number of students applying through UCAS to university than ever before.”

Mr Kershaw said the enrichment opportunities available to students equip them with the confidence to reach beyond. “As part of an 11-18 school, additional opportunities are open to them that they would not otherwise experience at college,” he said. Deputy head student Lucy Carr said: “Todmorden High School sixth form offers much more than just academic achievements.

“You get the chance to become a leader in the school and learn to balance this with your studies.”

Students are also given the opportunity to partake in the progression module, run by Leeds Metropolitan University, and study Open University modules.

Todmorden High School will be holding its sixth form taster day on Wednesday, February 6.
