Service veteran Jack Heywood

At 17, Jack Heywood, of Todmorden, who has died at the age of 91, joined the Territorial Army in spring 1939 and did not return to his Cornholme home for another six years.

His ship was redirected to Singapore and following the British surrender there in 1942 he was set to work by the Japanese on the infamous “railway of death” in Burma and then airstrips in Indo-China as a prisoner of war.

For many years after that Jack would not travel abroad.

He went to Vale School and Todmorden Sec0ondary School and started work as office junior at Thomas West Ltd, Stansfield Road, remaining in textiles until he retired as managing director of Coates Viyella in 1989.

He married Ida, who passed away in 2000, in 1950 and he is survived by their daughter Susan.

Jack joined Todmorden Golf Club in the early 1950s and served as its captain and president. In 1953 he joined the Masonic Lodge of Prince George and served as master in 1971.
