Stride out to the picnic at Pike with John

HOW many upper Calder Valley residents see Stoodley Pike every day, but have never been near it?

Distance walker John Shackleton reckons it could be as many as 65 or 70 per cent, and once again he is inviting people of all ages for a gentle but rewarding walk up for as Picnic at the Pike next Saturday, September 11.

John has raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK through a number of marathon treks over the past few years, and the charity will also benefit from the walk, through money raised from a small entry fee and a fundraising raffle.

It is an easy paced walk and route and the rewards on reaching the Pike are simply stunning, says John, who is from Higher Eastwood and like many Todmorden and Hebdenn Bridge people can see the Pike as he goes about his daily business.

"On a good day you can see for miles - last year it was clear enough to see the cooling towers at Ferrybridge which is about 45 miles away.

"But you can see many of our local landmarks, including Heptonstall church, Todmorden Town Hall and more.

"It's perfect for people from Todmorden or Hebden," he said.

Would-be walkers must confirm their entries with John before the day - call 01706 816479 between 6pm and 9pm - as he needs to know numbers before setting out.

On the day itself, walkers should meet at Lumbutts Chapel at 10am for registration before John leads the walk at 10.30am.

Take a packed lunch to refuel with a picnic at the Pike.

The route follows the gradual ascent up Long Stoop and along the skyline to the Pike.

Torches will be available for those walkers wanting to go up the steps to Stoodley Pike's balcony, a prime spot for taking in the view.

The return route heads out towards Erringden before joining London Road below the Pike back to Lumbutts, where tea and cakes will be served and some prizes are there to be had through the fundraising raffle.

John said the walk was a leisurely-paced three-and-a-half miles, with walkers getting back to the chapel in the early afternoon.

This is the third Picnic At The Pike John has held and so far they have had good weather each time.

"I reckon about 65 or 70 per cent of local people haven't been up there.

"On past walks children have come up with their grandparents and they are astonished at how big the Pike is.

"And there are some stunning views when we reach it," he said.
