Thousands support flood defence bid

TWO thousand residents have so far signed a petition calling on the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council to improve flood defences in the upper Calder Valley.
And Barry Greenwood, who is leading The Upper Calder Valley Flood Prevention Action Group (UCVFPAG), said he expects to get between 5,000 and 6,000 names before he takes the petition to 10 Downing Street.
Barry said: “The amount of signatures we have got back so far shows a big determination from the people to have the matter resolved so it brings back confidence to businesses, visitors and residents of the area.
“I am still collecting petition sheets and distributing more at the moment. I have been so busy and the amount of people contacting me has been overwhelming. Whilst I am doing everything I possibly can to get around and ensure I get the points of view of everyone, please don’t be discouraged if I haven’t got through to your area yet. I will do eventually.
“I also want to make a point to the people of Mytholmroyd that they haven’t been forgotten.”
Barry said that he hoped to have all the petitions collected by early November in anticipation of personally handing them to Prime Minister David Cameron before November 14.
He said that pressure from the UCVFPAG has already led to some positive changes in the area.
“In the last few weeks I have held positive meetings with the Environment Agency,” said Barry. “They were so positive in fact that trees disrupting the flow of water in the River Calder have been put down to be removed as a matter of urgency.”
Barry said that before he goes to London, he wants to make sure the UCVFPAG has as much evidence as possible to support its argument that urgent flood prevention work needs to be carried out.
On Tuesday, Barry and an environment engineer walked the banks of the River Calder taking water levels and a land engineer will be visiting the area on Saturday, November 3, to take land levels.
