Two days of ‘Burn’ events
THE Ban The Burn campaign is running a number of events this weekend.
Over the weekend of September 22 and 23, the group is marking the three-month anniversary of the floods with events and the issuing of a public statement calling for Natural England to ban burning and drainage on blanket bogs.
The campaign seeks to highlight the role of what it claims is inappropriate and publicly funded catchment management on grouse moors, including Walshaw Dean above Hebden Bridge, in areas increasingly vulnerable to heavy rainfall events.
From 10am to 4pm on both days a Climb Up To the Moor exhibition featuring luminescent paintings of blanket bog by Yorkshire artist Judith Nicholls, with accompanying text highlighting their role as carbon sinks, will be held at the Arts Festival Shop, Albert Street, Hebden Bridge, and there will be a Ban The Burn stall in the town’s St George’s Square.
On Sunday, September 23, they have organised a Climb up to the Moor guided walk around Walshaw Dean estate with peatland experts - meet at Hebden Bridge Station at 9.30am. Finally, also on Sunday, September 23, there is a meal and campaign update at Hebden Bridge Trades Club, Holme Street, at 7pm.
