Vale teenagers take up the challenge

YOUNG people have been getting active this summer with Duke of Edinburgh awards and their youth club.

The group of teenagers from Vale Youth Club in Cornholme, which is part of the Calderdale Council's Young People's Service, started their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award last December.

In May some of the group completed a practice expedition in the Yorkshire Dales and in July the whole group walked the hills over Hebden Bridge and Luddenden Dean, arriving at Jerusalem Farm camp site.

The group gained camp craft skills, map reading, working together, orienteering, the country code, camp cookery and basic safety in the outdoors. It is expected that the group will complete their bronze expedition section by October 2010.
