We can afford it if we want

Linden Road, Hebden Bridge.

THANK you for highlighting the problems faced by elderly people. This is one of the big challenges facing us as a society, because we’re living longer and the ‘Baby Boom’ generation is about to hit retirement age.

There are no easy answers to this one, but sadly our last governments (I’m talking Tories too) thought that they had one with the ‘outsourcing’ of care services.

The first warning sign is that ‘outsourcing’ sounds like something Orwell would have made up, but they pressed on regardless, their main aim being to get an unglamorous and unpredictable service off their balance books.

Let me be clear; there are many hard working people doing excellent work for these private companies.

But the ultimate aim of these companies is to make money, not to provide a good service.

Before you all shout at once, I do realise that council care services are sometimes lacking, but that’s just it – they’re poor because of poor resources, not because the shareholders need to pay their children’s fees at posh school.

The Green Party doesn’t believe that cutting and/or privatising is the way to go. Unlike the ‘main parties’, we want everyone to have the right to free social care, in their own home.

We know it’s expensive, but it’s in everyone’s interests to take care of older generations.

Don’t let the ‘powers that be’ fob you off by saying we can’t afford it – we can if we want to!
