We had fun - and helped our heroes
Todmorden came together to help injured British soldiers and raised around £900 in the process.
The Family Fun Day held Centre Vale Park was organised by Upper Calder Charities Assist (UCCA) and all proceeds went to Help for Heroes, the charity which helps wounded servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.
The event featured a tug of war, which was won by the local fire service, a dog show, a disco dancing competition, a fun run, a sponsored walk, various stalls and attractions and more. It was dubbed a big success by the organisers with the total raised expected to breach the 1,000 barrier once money from the Todmorden Harriers run and other fundraising efforts comes in and is tallied up
Shirley Fielder, chairwoman of UCCA, said: "It went very well. We got a lot more money than we expected bearing in mind the bad weather and the fact that football was on.
"People enjoyed the dog demonstration and the dog show and that raised quite a bit of money.
"I was really pleased that people in Todmorden helped with this. It was great to see the scouts and other groups helping out on the day. Todmorden came together to help the heroes which is fantastic.
"I would personally like to thank everybody who helped make this event the success it was, whether it was through sponsorship, volunteering or turning up on the day and taking part. I'm sure the money will now go towards helping the brave soldiers who have been injured in tragic circumstances."
Other events also included a bouncy castle and a penalty shootout competition run by a former professional footballer.
There is a committee meeting being held today to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this year's event and how it can be improved for next year. However Shirley said that next year's fun day, which is likely to include a car boot sale and other new activities, will not be in aid of Help for Heroes with UCCA instead turn their attention to more local charities.
The fun day also saw an appearance from some of the team from Physio & Therapies, sporting their bright new summer uniforms. They were on hand to treat competitors in the 2nd Todmorden Triathlon run by Calderdale Tri Club.
The physios and massage therapists treated the athletes before and after the event and have also donated all the proceeds of 200 to Help for Heroes.
Lynne Midwinter, one of the physios, said: "We had a great day and the competitors really appreciated getting some treatment on the day of the event. We hope we will be able to do more sporting events in the future.
"Physios and massage therapists have a big role to play preparing athletes for events as well as treating injuries and aches and pains after and it was great to be able to promote that."
