Not since their early days have members of Todmorden Civic Society been so busy.

Formed in the 1960s as Todmorden Conservation Group over the years they were involved in numerous projects throughout the town, either unilaterally or with other groups, and were largely responsible for setting up the Bellholme Sports Association, which led to the creation of the football pitches and clubhouse in Walsden in 2000.

Last year the group changed its name to Todmorden Civic Society, a move reflecting its affiliation to national amenity body Civic Voice and a determination to get the best deal for the town in terms of architectural design and preservation of its heritage assets.

The change of name also coincided with the launch of a new website www.todmordencivicsociety.org.uk

Since 2010, the society has been led by Paul Clarke, a professional architectural conservationist who has engaged the society in a number of local and national initiatives, including restoring the listed milestones around the town’s boundary and promoting the town on National Civic Day by hosting a guided walk last June.

This visited a number of key places of interest in the town and attracted visitors from outside the area.

TCS is often consulted on major planning applications.

Earlier last year their pragmatic approach and objection to the proposal by Netto for full demolition of the Olympia and Abraham Ormerod buildings led to several new members joining the civic society.
