You can help us to catch murderers

A MURDER squad is looking for volunteers to support its investigations.

West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET) is recruiting members of the public interested in helping investigate the force’s most serious crimes.

They need between 50 and 60 volunteers who will support detectives in several roles including house-to-house inquiries and helping to build and maintain relationships within communities, keeping them informed once an investigation has finished.

They will also assist with administration, proof-reading and transporting exhibits from crime scenes.

The force says the move means specially-trained detectives will have more opportunity to concentrate on priority work.

Head of the team, Det Chief Supt Max McLean – a former Calderdale divisional commander – said: “HMET is one of the most challenging areas of policing, dealing with some of the worst possible crimes.

“Volunteers will bring added value to the work carried out by the current team and will help us to engage with the communities that are affected by serious crime.

“We welcome adults of all ages from all backgrounds and would encourage them to take up this exciting opportunity and reap the rewards that police work has to offer,” said Det Chief Supt McLean.

Two open evenings will take place for anyone interested, on Monday, March 8 and on Thursday, March 11 in the lecture theatre at Bishopgarth Training School, Westfield Road, Wakefield, from 7pm to 8pm.
