You're choosing well - and it's saving doctors' time

MORE people in Yorkshire and the Humber are choosing the most appropriate service when it comes to their health, helping to save A&E doctors' valuable time - and the NHS money.

As a result of Choose Well, a campaign which was launched in October 2009, people are becoming better informed about the different services the NHS offers.

A survey, which was conducted to evaluate the impact of the campaign, found that 90 per cent of people learned something about health services from the posters or leaflets which were available all over the region.

- 43 per cent said they would think more carefully about which services to use next time they, or a family member, were unwell or injured

- 23 per cent would call NHS Direct next time they need help and advice

- 23 per cent would ask a pharmacist for advice next time they have a minor health problem rather than visit the GP or go to A&E

Regional director for public health at NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, Paul Johnstone, said: "This is fantastic progress, by just educating people we can make sure they get quick, appropriate and effective treatment and we can alleviate some of the pressure on A&E departments.

"We are not trying to dissuade anyone from coming to A&E, but with a bit of guidance people can make a big difference to the workload of A&E doctors and nurses and get the most appropriate help."
