Lottery grant for summer activities

A COMMUNITY group has secured £3,500 of lottery funding to stage a series of events at Portsmouth Recreation Ground.

Cornholme Community Project has been awarded a sustainability grant from the Big Lottery Community Spaces Fund which will allow the group to organise events to make the most of the new multi-use games area and other improvements installed at the recreation ground earlier this year.

First on the list is a series of summer holiday activities starting on Wednesday, August 3. Children aged up to ten and their families can make an animal mask, build a den, forage for food, wear fancy dress and listen to a story at the session, which runs from 1pm to 3pm. Activities will also be held on August 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 1pm to 3pm. No booking necessary. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The group is also planning a social event on the recreation ground in the autumn and is looking to hold planting days during the winter, as well as installing bird and bat boxes.

Chairwoman Rachel Johns said: “We’re hoping that the events we have planned will help local residents use Portsmouth Rec, whatever the season, and of course we get to have some fun too.”
