ONE of the upper Calder Valley’s oldest residents celebrated with family and friends as she reached her 106th birthday.

Mabel Fielden, who lives at Millreed Lodge, Rochdale Road, Todmorden, received her third telegram from the Queen – the first coming on her 100th birthday and second when she reached 105 - and lots of cards and flowers from loved ones on her special day.

“It was lovely,” she said.

Her daughter Anona came to have lunch with her, her son Raymond and grandchildren Helen and Alistair visited her, and several of her friends called in to pass on their best wishes.

Mabel, who was born in Lydgate on May 26, 1905, and has lived in Todmorden all her life, said: “I just carry on smoothly. I’m very thankful.”

Alison Greenwood, activities co-ordinator at Millreed Lodge, said: “It’s a pleasure to have Mabel here.

“She’s such a fabulous person and to reach such a grand age is amazing.”
