Making a splash to raise cash for charity

A MARKET trader has teamed up with one of Todmorden’s schools to organise a sponsored swim in aid of a children’s charity.

Tony Thomas, of Ham Corner on Todmorden Indoor Market, and Shade School have organised the swim on April 9 in aid of Operation Smile United Kingdom, an organisation which supports children in some of the world’s poorest countries who have a cleft lip.

Mr Thomas came up with the idea after seeing pictures on television.

“There was an advert on TV at Christmas and it pulled at the heart strings,” he said.

“We are hoping to raise £1,500, which will be enough for ten operations. Any more will be a bonus.”

Jan Dawson, headteacher at Shade School, said she was fully supportive of Mr Thomas’ idea.

“I think it will enable our children to support children who are less fortunate than themselves and help them to realise how fortunate they are in Todmorden and at Shade School,” she said.

The sponsored swim, which will take place in the school’s swimming pool, is also aiming to promote the facility. “We are trying to encourage swimming as much as possible,” she said.

To help contribute to the amount raised, Mr Thomas is offering 30-minute swimming lessons at the school’s pool on Monday afternoons.

There will be no charge for the lessons but participants will be asked to make a donation to the charity.

Anybody interested in taking part in the swim or the lessons is asked to see Mr Thomas at the market for more information.
