A Calder Valley brother and sister-in-law who ran the London Marathon raised thousands of pounds for their local charities.

Former Todmorden policeman and current manager of Hebden Royd Ladies’ Football Club, Laurie Dyer, and his sister-in-law Kathy McMahon, both of Mytholmroyd, completed the marathon.

And Laurie added an unusual method of fundraising to boost the total, playing a string of folk gigs to bolster the amount he raised.

Kathy, along with Laurie’s wife Jill, were in the audience for some of the shows.

Laurie raised £2,300 for the Visually Impaired Children Taking Action charity, which provides support for blind children to take part in activities, and Kathy raised £1,000 for Cancer Research.

Laurie ran despite being hampered by a string of injuries but is now continuing running and will soon be in training for the Great North Run in September.
