The upper Calder Valley will be illuminated with colourful lanterns again later this year at a new community event.

Following on from the success of the Valley of Lights last year, a new event called Lamplighter will take place in Todmorden on November 23.

Organised by the Handmade Parade team, Lamplighter will feature a lantern parade, illuminated artwork, night markets, street bands and a few surprises.

Hannah Merriman, Handmade Parade co-ordinator, said: “Valley of Lights was an amazing evening, irrepeatable and magic despite the weather.

“Now we want to build on it and help Todmorden create an annual event that will light up the whole town for a night and bring people here from far and wide.

“After this month’s national award for the Valley of Lights event we know that when we work together - councils, artists, market traders, businesses, schools, young people and volunteers - we can come up with an event on a truly national scale.

“Let’s do it again.”

The exact parade time and route are still to be finalised but it will take place shortly after Kidsfest at Todmorden Town Hall (noon until 3.30pm) the town’s Christmas lights switch-on (4pm). It will stretch well into the evening.

Organisers are inviting people to get involved and make Todmorden the place to be on the day.

“We want as many people in the town as possible to celebrate the ‘Lighting of the Lamps’, to enjoy the magic of the evening and to let the world know that Tod really does know how to throw a party,” Hannah said.

“Help us make this the first of many years of a wonderful new event in Todmorden.”

Shop owners are encouraged to think about decorating their windows and staying open late.

Stallholders selling food, gifts or crafts are asked to contact Peter Brennan, of Todmorden market, on 01706 819731 to book a stall.
