Plan for free range eggs to follow

TODMORDEN could be self-sufficient in free range eggs this time next year if everyone works towards that goal, according to Incredible Edible Todmorden.

The Every Egg Matters and Make Every Egg a Todmorden Egg plan will be launched in the new year and Pam Warhurst, a founding member of the Incredible Edible group, said she hoped to hear from people who kept hens, or would like to keep hens.

Incredible Edible Todmorden aims to create the country's first self-sufficient town.

Pam said working with a rough estimate of egg consumption and the town's population about 3,000 eggs would have to be produced each week.

This would be possible, she said, if an average of 20 people kept around 200 free range hens each – that's 4,000 hens in total.

"This is an achievable aim and would be the first step towards self-sufficiency for Todmorden.

"By this estimation we do not need sheds all over place, we just need about 20 people, each with about an acre of land," said Pam.

"We know people who keep 150 free range hens at the moment.

"We would like to hear from anyone who keeps hens or would like to keep hens.

"We want to work with small land holders and maybe we could set up an egg co-operative.

"We would like to have the eggs packaged locally too and sold in the supermarkets, market and shops in the town," she said.

Anyone wanting to get involved should contact Pam through the Incredible Edible Todmorden website or at the Bear Cafe, Rochdale Road, Todmorden.
